Joey Gomes - General Manager Meet Joey Gomes, coach and general manager of the Healdsburg Prune Packers. Nice guy, hardass, teacher, tutor, mentor. Joey will do what it takes to get his players and students (theseare interchangeable terms) to play the simple, subtle, existential, wonderful game of baseball the right way. Hard. All in. All the time. Joey, born in Marin but raised in Petaluma,is a lifelong baseball guy. High school All-American at Casa Grande and two time All-Americanat Santa Clara University, draftedby the Tampa Bay Devil Rays,10 year pro, career .300hitter with 101 HRs and 526 RBIs. In baseball parlance it’s called “paying your dues.” Thisiswhat he takes to thefield every day to begin the transformationof the raw young talents that come to the Prune Packerseach season into theelite players of tomorrow. "My coach at Casa, Bob Leslie, told me once that I wouldn't learn how to play baseball until I learned how to fail" said Gomes. "I didn't understand it then, but I came to. Baseball teaches you how to deal with failure. It's a great metaphor for life. You hit it perfect, right on the nose, a screaming line drive, and it goes right to the shortstop. You did everything right but you made out. Does that mean you failed?” Gomes suggests not. Tip your cap and move on. Like life. Get 'em the next time. Life is a mix of sad and bad, stops and starts, ascents and descents. Life is all over the place, like a baseball that can be hit anywhere on the field. Resilience is a quality suitable for all ages and nowhere is it more obvious than in learning how to hit a baseball. (Bob Padecky, Press Democrat, 4/20/09) Elliot North, Assist. Coach Elliot North played for the Packers for 5 years and will be coaching his second year in 2018. Elliot graduated from Healdsburg High School in 2012. He was named captain and team MVP his senior year, staring as an All-League catcher. Elliot played four years at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon, starting in over 70 games at catcher and garnering 3 Academic All-Conference honors. With a slugging percentage over .350 and fielding percentage over .990, Elliot brings great talent and experience to the Packers. Bill Ryan, Pitching Coach Bill Ryan utilizes an individual approach to developing player mechanics, working to ensure the improvement and success of the Packer staff. Ryan has worked with pitchers ranging from youth ranks to the college level, polishing and developing pitchers for years. With certifications from the National Pitching Association as well as the Tom House/ Rod Dedeaux Baseball Institute, Bill brings extensive pitching knowledge to the Packer program. The Prune Packers play at historic Recreation Park in Healdsburg and charge $5 for all tickets with general admission seating and children under 12 are free. Our 2018 Concessionaire once again is Healdsburg's own, "The Wurst" owned by Charles Bell. The Prune Packers rent Recreation Park from the City of Healdsburg and all City rules apply. The Prune Packers have great support from our local community and look forward to welcoming all to exceptional "wood bat" collegiate baseball. Many Prune Packer alumni have and are playing in professional baseball and on July 21, 2018 we celebrate our past with an Alumni Day at the Park.
We are a volunteer based Club and would love to have you become a part of this exciting adventure.
